Figurines. Porcelain Buddhist lions with colourless glaze. Dehua ware, Ming dynasty, early 17th century The Hallwyl collection contains many Dehua ware Buddhist lions, but these two are among the most intricate and finely modelled. They are not strictly speaking a pair, for the male lion is customarily shown with a brocaded ball, and the female with a cub or cubs. When Buddhism entered China from India during the Han dynasty, lions were a part of iconography, shown guarding the Buddha. Because lions were not native to China their depiction gradually changed, becoming less fierce and more decorative and playful. By the Ming dynasty, they bore a greater resemblance to Pekinese dogs than beasts of prey.
